Hopes & DreamsQuilt Challenge for ALS
|
![]() Project Hopes & Dreams Every year I try to find a charity project that we can all ban together and do for our community. Well at the end of 2011 I was desperately trying to figure out what we as quilters can do that would benefit the most people. When the mail came the last week of December and I was going through it pulling what needed attention and filing the rest in File 13 (the trash) when I ran across an envelope that was puffy and it sparked my interest. I opened it and it was batting samples....well as I reach for File 13 I noticed a letter that caught my attention. The owner of this batting company was asking quilters to donate quilts for ALS. As she went on to explain her son had been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) 3 years ago and she is trying to raise awareness of this horrible disease. She went on to say that there are 35,000 to 50,000 people in the USA that are battling ALS. My heart was pounding at this moment....this was our charity. Many of you have heard of Jeremy Williams the coach from our community with ALS that got the Extreme Home Makeover last year and his battle with ALS. Many of you may know about the ALS walks as well. But what many of you don't know is that this is not the only thing ALS affects here in our community. I had a friend die from ALS about a year and a half ago from Phenix City . One of our customers in Auburn has a friend battling ALS there as well. And really close to my heart is my husband's best friend of 36 years, Don Stephens. Don was diagnosed in May of 2011 with ALS. When he first found out he only had a pain in his shoulder. Today he has trouble with most everyday things and he is in a wheelchair. This disease can move rapidly or slowly, however most of these patients are wheelchair-bound. This disease was discovered well over 100 years ago and shocking to know that there is no treatment or help available today. This project know as "Hope and Dreams" is what we will be joining forces with. We want to help patients of ALS know they are NOT forgotten with quilts of comfort . Make people more aware of ALS as well as help raise money for research. I urge each of you to go into your stash (I know you have one) and find what you can and let's get busy making quilts for "Hope and Dreams". Please know that ALS does affect men and women but it is mostly men. We will accept any quilt that is 36" x 44" or larger. Most of these quilts will be used by a patient in a wheelchair. However they love bed size quilts as well. The quilt shop donating the most quilts will win a prize values at $1000 which we will donate the prize money to the ALS foundation. If you come into the shop we can give you a couple of quick and easy patterns to make these or you can use whatever pattern you wish. Just PLEASE help us to help ALS and make us a quilt or two or ever how many you wish. There is a need in our community....our state....and our country and I think that together we can help. Sew Much Fun will be doing this in Honor of Don Stephens.....please join us in this great project. We will be collecting quilts until July 2012. Wouldn't it be great if we had so many quilts that we had to rent a U-Haul to deliver them? Happy Sewing and stay warm! We hope to see you soon!
